Bought this card for our honeymoon driving up the Croatian coast. It recognized the maps right away when we put it in our unit and directed us well our entire time there. We were a bit concerned that Croatia wouldn't have full coverage, but it had every road we needed in the database. Very easy and would def. do this again.

Satechi CR -3600 car holder mount for iPhone 4, 3G & 3Gs, BlackBerry Torch, HTC EVO, DROID, Samsung EPIC on Windshield and Dashboard Review

Satechi CR -3600 car holder mount for iPhone 4, 3G and 3Gs, BlackBerry Torch, HTC EVO, DROID, Samsung EPIC on Windshield and Dashboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few weeks ago I was looking for a mounting solution for my iPhone in my Dodge truck, and was intrigued by the description and reviews I saw of this one. A few days later, it arrived & I began experimenting with different ways to mount it. The more ways I tried, the more I realized how versatile of a mount this is. My mounting location of choice was the overhanging lip of the dashboard, above and to the right of the steering wheel. However, the dash is composed of sort of rippled, patterned plastic, and I seriously doubted that I could get any kind of suction cup mount to work.
Amazingly, the "Smart Pad" that comes with this mount solves this problem perfectly, although it is not very well described in the enclosed instructions. The Smart Pad is simply a tacky, very soft rubber-like disc, which is placed between a non-uniform mounting surface, and the suction cup mount. Somehow, by applying suction against it from the suction cup mount side, the soft surface against the non-uniform mounting surface conforms to that surface and maintains suction against it. Once I figured this out, I successfully managed to mount my iPhone just above and to the right of steering wheel. I set it up so that it was easily visible while driving, got good GPS reception through the windshield, and was easily touched from my right hand, even while holding on to the steering wheel.
But, how well would it hang on to the overhanging lip, and how long would it stay? The true test came right away: a drive from from Arizona to Alaska via the Alaska Highway - four days of normal road vibration, followed by about two days of rough roads with potholes, and frostheaves. The result: it didn't come off even once. I had to worry about mosquitoes, shifting trailer loads, and high gas prices. But never about my iPhone coming loose.
A couple of weeks later, it continues to hang on tightly. No longer do I have to fumble around with my iPhone to change songs, or try to wrestle it out from in between the seats, where it's slid into on a corner.
Overall, a convenient mounting option for the iPhone that is versatile, well-made, and easy to use.

Magellan eXplorist 510 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Magellan eXplorist 510 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually got this for my wife who runs a Girl Scout troop. This is an extremely fun tool for her troop (as well as for her, let's face it!) which does more than just function as a basic GPS.
In addition to making sure that you don't get lost, there are a number of other cool features:
- See a cool feature or landmark that you'd love to catalog? Take a quick picture using the built-in 3.2 MP camera along with your GPS location so you can go back and visit previously breathtaking views.
- Pictures not good enough for you? How about creating an audio log of what you're seeing? That's built-in too.
- Memory concerns? This device allows the use of microSD cards to expand your capacity for enough picture snapping and audio logging well beyond a typical enthusiast's hunger.
- Worried about the weather? This little device has got that in mind as well. It's waterproof and appears to be well-built for some good rain exposure. Haven't tested that aspect out, but just the general feel and build of this item has my wife feeling completely comfortable in any environment.
- Decent battery life. The device advertises 16 hours of continuous use. We didn't find ourselves wanting on a recent outing. However, you might want to pack some extra batteries just in case. The battery issue is a pro/con for me; making it a AA-battery device makes it easy to get the requisite energy in a flash, but part of me would have preferred a longer-laster lithium-ion charging solution. On the other hand, charging a lithium-ion device in the middle of nowhere leaves a lot to be desired as well. In the end, I gave it a thumbs-up.
- If you're interested in "treasure hunting", the geocaching.com activity might appeal to you. We didn't pursue it, but there is a 30-day free trial period where you can hunt waterproof containers across the US using your GPS device along with a subscription to the service. You can also add your own geocache for others to find. It's a unique idea.
Road maps are also pre-loaded, but don't expect this device to find the nearest Arby's for you; this is not what it's for. However, it does have more important points-of-interest like fire departments, hospitals, etc., should you find yourself in dire need of finding emergency assistance.
Other cool features include sun rise/set times, best hunt/fish times, alarm clock, etc. It's a neat little device that will fit most needs.
One other reviewer mentioned that the compass isn't good when you're stationary. This is absolutely correct. The GPS seems to key in on movement and using your differential x,y position to provide you with an accurate compass heading...just remember to keep moving to get your bearings right. While moving, the compass is dead-on accurate.
For a beginner hiker (or maybe even hunter/fisher!), this affordable hiking GPS is pretty cool and gets the job done.

Arkon GN047 Removable Vent Mount for Nuvi & StreetPilot Review

Arkon GN047 Removable Vent Mount for Nuvi and StreetPilot

I was looking for a way to mount my Garmin so it was within easy reach and this device works perfectly. It will put a bit of strain on your AC vents so buyer beware, if they are flimsy they could snap particularily if you push or pull the unit while mounted. The vents in my Infiniti are of quite a sturdy plastic build and they work fine with no risk of breakage. If you've got the vents for it it'll work as advertised. Otherwise you may have an inadvertent vent repair.

Sony NVU94T 4.8-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic and Text-to-Speech Review

Sony NVU94T 4.8-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic and Text-to-Speech
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a relative newcomer to GPS, but I'm learning quickly. I've tried out several, compared notes with friends and read dozens of reviews. The NV-U94T received uneven reviews - some liked it, and some (like CNET) were luke warm. My first reaction, however, when seeing it on display at Radio Shack was very positive, so I took a closer look.
Sony doesn't have the same reputation for GPS that companies like Garmin and TomTom have. I believe that this factor, combined with the initially high price for this device ($399 list until recently), and slightly flakey routing with the first firmware release, all led to this being a somewhat ignored model this fall.
Although the NV-U94T was just released this fall (August 2008?) as the top of the line for Sony's fall lineup, Sony decided to drop the list price from $399 to $199 just last week. While I was admiring the device when it was selling for $299 at Radio Shack before Christmas, when I went back there a few days ago and saw it at $199 (with a 30 day return option, and 90 day exchange option), I felt that I had to take a chance.
In short - it's been great so far.
The display is spectacular. At 4.8", this is the biggest, brightest, clearest display I've seen for anywhere near this price. The processor seems to be very fast: the user interface is crisp and responsive, route calculation is very fast, as is re-calculation when I drive off the recommended route. The unit boots up and acquires satellite signals in seconds.
The user interface is quite good, easy to navigate, and generally requires very few taps to get me to the desired function. Having dedicated menu buttons on the left of the screen, regardless of the display, means that I can always get to a top level menu with a single tap. The 94T supports a number of finger gestures (that got a laugh out of my teenage son!), such as swiping a large roof shape on screen with a finger to indicate that you want the device to navigate home, drawing a clockwise circle to zoom in or counter-clockwise to zoom out (both to presets that you select and set).
The feature set is pretty huge. Bluetooth can be used several ways: the device has a built in media player that can stream through your bluetooth equipped car audio system, and it can also act as a handsfree bluetooth speakerphone for your cell phone (works great). Text to speech is excellent, and you have a choice of voices and languages. There's a built in 6-way accelerometer and some kind of pressure sensor that help to keep track of your position if you briefly lose contact with the GPS satellites. They call this "position plus".
Sony's "super suction cup" mount works incredibly well. It's a fairly typical suction cup, but with some kind of gel disk on the bottom that's a bit tacky to the touch. It's not a true adhesive, so it leaves no residue. But it allows the mount to faster to a textured dashboard securely in seconds -- and can be removed just as quickly without leaving a trace. I like the ability to quickly mount it on my dash and remove it as well: my current car is leased and I'll be returning it in less than a year -- no way I'd put a permanent mount on the car. Also, being able to mount it on my dash is excellent: it's truly NOT obstructing my view out the windshield, and I've heard stories about the police in NJ ticketing people lately for having a GPS on the windshield blocking the view.
Not sure if this next point is common to all wide-screen GPS's, but the 94T goes into a split-screen mode as you approach intersections, showing you a detailed close up of the intersection on the left side of the screen, and the normal map on the right. The close up shows you all the lanes that are available to you, and which ones to use or avoid. Works quite well so far.
The device doesn't always pick the same route I would, but I imagine that no GPS will read your mind and always choose a route using the same logic that you would. However the routes it picks always seem to be within a mile of the same total trip length that I choose, with total trip time within about a minute or two of the routes I might choose in favor of the ones recommended by the GPS. It's actually got me reevaluating the routes I've used for years -- and it seems to be choosing well so far. Additionally, if you keep ignoring a recommended route in favor of your own, I read that it will start to apply a greater weight in its routing algorithm to your preferred routes, and eventually start using your preferred roads.
The unit I picked up this past week as recent 2008 NAVTEQ maps of the US, Canada and Puerto Rico installed with something over 5 million points of interest included. I've read that recent Garmin's have something like 6 million POI's -- not sure what I'm missing, and so far, it's found all my local restaurants, gas stations, etc.
The 94T also has a traffic receiver built in and a separate antenna you can string along the edge of your windshield. The 94T comes with a prepaid 3 month trial for the traffic service -- I haven't tried this yet, and don't plan to subscribe anyway. Hopefully my only future expense with this will be a map update sometime in the next year or two.
I picked up a nice aftermarket case for the 94T at Radio Shack for $20 -- it's designed for GPS's in the 4.5" to 5" range, and fits this one like a glove. The case looks and feels like a large generic horizontal cell phone case with a magnetic flap closure. I feel much safer carrying the 94T in this than having it bare.
Two things about this that I find a bit annoying:
1) I wish Sony didn't force you to use their "memory stick" media for expanded storage. I'd prefer more industry standard mini- or micro-SD, as they can be found cheaper than Sony's proprietary format. Not a big deal, but I prefer standards.
2) I've read that battery life on this device is only about 2.5 hours, while it appears that high end TomTom and Garmin units have double the battery life. I don't know when I'd use this without having it plugged into the car power cable. But I imagine that if I ever needed it on battery, I'd prefer to have better battery life.
Although the built in lithion-ion battery is not supposed to be user serviceable, Sony provides directions for removing it for recycling in the event that you're trashing the device. It looks exceedingly easy to open the device, and if the battery can be found for purchase (online somewhere I'd guess), it looks like it would be very easy to replace it if needed.
Anyway -- aside from the two minor gripes above, I'm loving the NV-U94T. I'll be trying it out on a few trips this weekend (a few hundred miles), and hope to give it a good workout. So far, I'm very happy with this, and at the new price of $199, I think it's a steal. (I'm inserting a link below, and you can pick it up at Radio Shack for $199, or order it directly from SonyStyle for the same price)
- Jon
Sony NVU94T 4.8-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic and Text-to-Speech
UPDATE 1/19/09: I've lived with this, using it every day (although I generally don't need it) to observe how it works, quirks, etc. As some others have posted, it occasionally comes up with a somewhat bizarre route -- but most of the time, the recommended routes are perfectly valid, and sometimes faster than the "obvious" routes that I normally choose.
I've been using this long enough now to finally experience the "learning" feature that I read about. Every day after work I drive south on the NJ Turnpike from Exit 11 to Exit 8A, and then take various preferred routes over to Princeton Junction. The NV-U94T attempted to steer me OFF the NJ Turnpike at Exit 9 every day, taking me on Route 1 south instead. The route is "valid", but doesn't take into account the fact that Route 1 tends to be a parking lot in rush hour. Knowing how bad Route 1 is, I ignore the NV-U94T's directions and continue south past Exit 9, at which point I hear, "Updating route!" and it figures out the new route from there.
Last week, the GPS stopped insisting on Exit 9, and actually guided me down my preferred route -- and did so consistently for the last several days of the week. As I note at the top of this write-up, I had read that the device actually tracks the times you ignore recommended routes in favor of other roads (I believe it was a Sony engineer saying this -- I'll continue to look for the link and will post it back when I find it) and updates the relative "weight" of your preferred road so that their algorithm will eventually recommend roads increasingly in line with your preferences. I was skeptical at first, but the new behavior seems consistent, and is in line with the item I read about the system re-weighting the route.
Last night I friend stopped by with his family, and happened to bring along *his* latest gadget acquisition -- a shiny new Garmin 4.3" GPS (not sure which model -- I think its a 760). We were taking both families out to dinner, and decided to try both GPS's side-by-side to see how they compared.
They both booted up about as quickly. The Garmin acquired satellites almost immediately, and the Sony took about 10 seconds more -- but then both held the signals for the rest of the night. Although the Sony calculates a new route quickly, the Garmin definitely seems to do this faster: about 3 or 4 seconds on the Sony, and almost instant on the Garmin. I'm guessing the Garmin has a faster processor. Note though: even though the Sony takes a few seconds to update a route, it's still fast enough to do this before I get to the next intersection after missing a recommended turn...Read more›

The SD card works fine. One problem I had is this is a micro SD
card so it needs an adapter to fit in the SD card slot on my
Garmin GPS. The micro SD card came in a Garmin package but no
adapter. There was an empty space in the package where it looks like their should have been an adapter. I was leaving for Spain the day
after I rcvd the sd card so I had to go to radio shack to buy an
adapter. The company needs to specify whether the package contains
and adapter or if you need to purchase it separately.

TomTom VIA 1535TM 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps Review

TomTom VIA 1535TM 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic and Maps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update on 4/20/11:
I continued to have significant issues with the TomTom device, and with absolutely no help from TomTom, Amazon allowed me to exchange the product (which was very easy to do!). The replacement device works MUCH better -- I'm not experiencing the bugginess or lack of responsiveness I had with the previous device. I'm assuming my original had a defect with the touchscreen. I'm quite happy with the device itself, but I left the rating at 3/5 stars for 2 reasons:
1) My review of the MyTomTom software as of April 2011 and the false advertising (see below) stands.
2) TomTom Support does not seem ready to support the new product or software yet.
For those who care most about the GPS unit itself though, I'm very happy with it -- intuitive, responsive, beautiful interface, and more capable than previous TomToms. Once TomTom fixes their software and support, I'm sure a review could easily give it 5/5 stars.Original Review on 4/14/11:
I was excited to buy this product recently, and receive it on 4/12/11.
However, I have to warn everyone considering any of the newer TomTom VIA line to be cautious.
First, TomTom recently retired their old "TomTom Home" software for new "MyTomTom" software. Many of the features on this Amazon page and on TomTom's page are NOT available because the new software is incapable of supporting those features. This includes map sharing (sharing updates), QuickGPSFix, speed camera updates, voice purchases, backing up your device, etc. I confirmed this via email and via a phone call with TomTom Support. Online forums seem to suggest that it could be months or longer before the software provides this. The phone support rep said that perhaps some of the features would be offered in 30-60 days.
Secondly, the device I received has a sluggish interface most of the time, and the interface will freeze (especially if there's no GPS signal) the rest of the time. The routing functionality is very fast, but it's not useful if you can't actually interact with the device. I received a bit of a runaround from TomTom Support, and even sent them a video I recorded of the problems -- they had no suggestions and suggested I wait for the next application release to fix the bugs.
Finally, the TomTom support site and reps are not ready to support these new devices. Their online support site has articles which fail to even list the new VIA line and their phone support menu doesn't even include it. When using email support, the support rep kept sending me articles on other TomTom models.
Just to summarize, you won't receive the features advertised (this is confirmed), and my experience with the device was poor from the start. I can't express how disappointed I am -- this looked an excellent product, and the interface is beautiful... but unusable.

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Major Metropolitan Areas in Europe (microSD/SD Card) Review

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Major Metropolitan Areas in Europe (microSD/SD Card)
Average Reviews:

I bought the Micro SD cards because I thought it would be better so that all the maps are on the card and can just plug it into my GPS. However, if you want to download specific routes or biking routes which I have done, you have to also purchase Way Point Trip Manager in order to transfer the information. If you purchase the CD you can transfer the information with Map Source which is included with the GPS. Had I known that I would have had to purchase extra software to be able to transfer the information, I would have bought the CD's.

I bought this for a trip to France last month, as an add-on for our Nuvi 305. Popped it in, and could instantly start creating favorites for spots we were going to be. Once in France, turned on the unit and it worked perfectly. No manual switching between maps or configuration of any kind: plug it in, and away we went. It has a huge database of points of interest, and it knows about every single street in France, even the tiniest one lane road through vineyards or around minuscule towns. If you have a Nuvi and are going to be in France, I wholeheartedly recommend this.

I have used Garmin products before and like the reliability and performance. This unit works very well and in addition a great value price wise. The touch screen works perfectly - no more hassling with non-user friendly buttons. Very easy to navigate the GUI and always seems to find a signal quickly. Routes seem to work well for me (have had it for 2 weeks so not fully tested on routing). Voice prompts are functional and options exist for different languages - I like using the English accent voice. Another great benefit is the size - no external antenna and a small thin unit with a big screen (big enough for me)very well packaged. You could carry it around for hikes or biking as it has that mode and can easily fit into a pocket. All in all I'm very satisfied and use it every day for business because it saves me time and money.

Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS (Neutral Color) Review

Garmin Edge 500 Cycling GPS (Neutral Color)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great bike computer with tons of amazing features. My only complaint about the unit itself is that the screen quality could be improved. It is not clear and easy to read - especially when you just want to glance down and see information. You really need to take your eyes off of the road for a moment or two to figure out what fields you are viewing and what they say.
I have not had any problems at all with the function of the unit. It easily found satelites and is pretty obvious how to configure. I really like the ability to connect this to my computer after rides and keep a detailed log of my rides. I gave the software three stars because it is very buggy and still quite rough around the edges.
I purchased the Garmin Heart Rate Monitorseparately. I do not have the Garmin GSC 10 Speed/Cadence Bike Sensor- it seems unnecessary for me. I don't really have a need to monitor my cadence and the speed measurements from the gps are very accurate - even on trails under pretty heavy foliage. I don't use this on a trainer.
I would strongy suggest that anyone who is considering this purchase make sure they visit the Garmin Edge 500 Forum on the Garmin website. You will learn more there than you ever wanted to know about the device. The DC Rainmaker blog also has an excellent detailed write-up.
As far as size, it is roughly the same size as my old Planet Bike Protege 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and Temperature. The mount couldn't be easier. It uses two rubber bands to attach the base to the handlebars or stem. The unit locks into the base with a 90 degree twist - very easy and secure. It comes with tons of extra bands and I threw an extra set in my seat bag - just in case.

GARMIN NUVI 750 CAR GPS NAVIGATION 4.3" 2011 MAPS Review

GARMIN NUVI 750 CAR GPS NAVIGATION 4.3 2011 MAPS
Average Reviews:

Garmin nuvi 750 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Portable Dashboard Mount Included
Great Value for the money! I found the Garmin 750 easy to set up and easy to use. Operating this unit is intuitive, but complete directions are included. I have yet to "play" with all the features, but it works great while using it for my second job. I have to find a lot of locations in the countryside (a lot of back roads) and the unit has been invaluable! You get one free update with the unit that should be done as soon as you get it to make sure the most recent maps are downloaded. One note of caution - you have to download the most recent version of maps on the Garmin website and you have to do this using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I found this out when I couldn't download updates using Google Chrome and had to contact Garmin.

ContourGPS HD Camera Review

ContourGPS HD Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OVERVIEW:
I own the Contour GPS (C-GPS = 1080p) and the Contour HD (C-HD = 720p); and my main use is for snowboarding in conditions varying from blue bird sunny days to snowy flat light days.
VIDEO QUALITY: (5 out of 5)
The Contour GPS (C-GPS) features some much needed improvements over its 720p predecessor, especially when capturing footage in low light conditions. Where the C-HD's video quality suffered on overcast/snowy days, the C-GPS excels. Subtle details in terrain (fresh vs tracked snow, etc.) are now clearly visible. Overall, HD video quality and light metering is greatly improved compared to the C-HD.
Also there is a new convenient switch onboard, where you can switch between two programmed video settings (i.e. everyday outdoor vs. dusk) for when the weather and lighting conditions change.
PORTABILITY / EASE OF USE: (5 out of 5)
The C-GPS is the same size and shape as the original C-HD helmet cam, with the exception of the record toggle switch which now sits a few millimeters higher for easier operation. A nice improvement especially when wearing gloves/mitts. Turn the camera on, and two red laser sights light up to aid in lens alignment. Three lights on the unit - a battery light, memory card light, and GPS light - help identify whether your battery is dead, memory is full, or if a GPS signal lock has been acquired.
Heads up on memory card compatibility. The C-GPS is finicky about what brand, class, and size of micro sdhc cards used; and how you format your cards. For example, I bought a 32gb Class 4 Kingston card off newegg that works like a charm; however neither my 8gb Class 6 Transcend or my 8gb Class 2 Sandisk work. Also, my Kingston card only works if formatted by the camera (not my computer).
DESIGN QUALITY: (4 out of 5)
As with previous Contour helmet cams, the design remains virtually unchanged. The body is made of aluminum and plastic. The camera attaches to various plastic mounts (two flat mounts and one goggle mount included inside the package) using Contour's "T-rail system".
My only complaint is the T-rails are made of plastic, rather than aluminum. The plastic T-rails are a weak link and are susceptible to breaking. I wish Contour would have upgraded the T-rail material to aluminum on the C-GPS, but hopefully they will get it right on the next one.
BATTERY LIFE: (3 out of 5)
C-GPS battery life is significantly less than the C-HD. When recording on a fully-charged battery, the C-HD lasts about twice as long as the C-GPS. This is likely attributed to the more demanding 1080p bitrate as well as the GPS function. In my application I typically record approximately 60 minutes worth of footage before the battery runs out on my C-GPS; while the C-HD records approximately 110 minutes worth of footage on a full charge. Note these figures are based on extreme operating conditions where freezing temperatures greatly affect battery life. In any event, buy extra batteries... you'll be glad you did.
Another battery-related gripe is the mechanism which keeps the battery in place. The previous Contour models used a locking latch to keep the battery from accidentally popping out; however the new model uses a new 'hook' mechanism which can be cumbersome. This is discussed in greater detail on Contour's support forums.
GPS: (4 out of 5)
GPS accuracy is questionable, but I think it's a nice feature and a step in the right direction for helmet cams. I typically get a GPS lock within 3-minutes of power up, even on overcast or snowy days. The light on the front of the camera blinks green as a satellite lock is being acquired, and turns solid green within a few minutes once GPS signal has been acquired.
STORYTELLER SOFTWARE: (2 out of 5)
Prior to the latest software update, I would've rated Contour's Storyteller Software a 1/5. Their software is buggy and unstable, particularly on mac machines. However, the latest update (as of this review) addresses stability issues; and tackles one of the biggest gripes in the Contour community - accessibility of the GPS information without having to upload to their servers. Suffice to say, their software team has some major catching up to do with their hardware team.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall, I recommend seriously considering this product if you're in the market for a helmet cam to capture HD footage while snowboarding. This model raises the bar for future helmet cams and I am glad that I upgraded from my old C-HD. I may have a few minor gripes, but IMHO, it is currently the best HD Helmet Cam offering in terms of video quality, portability, and features at its price point.

ContourHD Camera Review

ContourHD Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update 9-16-2010 This is no longer their top of the line cam - the new one is based on this camera but includes a GPS and tags your images with location. You'll need their viewer to see the map movement as the video plays.
Update: 7-2010
Tonights episode of Dirty Jobs showed this camera strapped to a head strap for the host, Mike Rowe, who was 408 feet above the cement floor decending & window cleaning in Hawaii. Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. The quality was as good as the cable company could deliver in their 6:1 re-compression of HD. A full HD viewfinderless camera has value when you must get the shot.
using a sandisk 16GB microSD card and the maximum detail [1080P] + best quality I could get 3 hr, 6 minutes of video recorded with battery leftover. If you use the lower resolution setting the battery may be the limiting factor - I have not tried that yet.
I bought this to produce a bluray disc of a police helicopter team, using a gyro stabilized canon professional camera in back and wanting a 2nd angle up front. This comes with an adhesive patch that sticks to the side of the pilot's helmet to give a 135 degree wide field of view. The integrated rails on both sides permit the ultimate flexibility in mounting the camera, and second options for this cam are car mounts, etc.
The quality is GREAT. The lens is the downfall - there is some pincushion effect due to the inexpensive lens and wide angle. I'll deal with it for the price and the shots you can get with it, plus I can trim out the distortion in post editing.
One note - the output is .mov which is fine for macs, but for pc's you will need to transcode if you run premiere pro cs4 from adobe as it does not import .mov natively. Perhaps that is a good time to clip the edges where the bent picture is most noticable.
Another factor to like is the simplicity. With gloved hands you slide the top forward to record and back to stop, with a beep to start and and double beep to stop - it's very hard to mess up except for your horizon, which is why there are detents and lasers.
Detents and lasers?
Yes, - there are detents in the event you mount it on the right and left hand side of a helmet or rotate it in a mount. The 2 lasers can be turned on to tell you what is level with resepect to the imager. This is helpful when you rotate it but you must manually keep track of the bottom of the screen (below the laser points ) as you rotate it, otherwise your output will be upside down.
For the price, you simply can not beat it. Buy a 16 GB sandisk micro-sd card to go with it Sandisk 16GB Microsd Card Note that they have a low packaging option which the card is inside a plastic carrier and inside an ESD bag but no box or other trash with it that goes in the landfill - smart packaging.
One of the other great applications for this is taking HD video where you otherwise would NOT take your $3K camera - the beach - the water park - etc. You won't get the absolute best quality but you will get 1080 p hd that is playable on macs or pcs in native players!
Another great use is for children. It's easy to use, inexpensive, and highdef. For the kids who are beyond the toy grade cameras but not ready for a professional unit, this fills the gap. Adults will love its simplicity. On or Off - no fancy buttons to press, and everything complex is set while attached to the computer.
Finally there is my use - have a 2nd angle view for use with NLE systems. You can now do a/b video fades by time syncing the output from this camera with your primary cam. Be sure to expose something that will sync the two that gets recorded on both at the start of shootng.
I'm only deducting a star becuase of the pincushion effect of the lens. I realize for this price you are not getting an HD lens, and I realize that HD will show any defects, but a few more dollars in the lens would have made this 5 stars - it is oh so close. Be sure to pick up extra memory and batteries if you plan to use it at maximum definition because it makes some big files fast.

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Personal Navigator Review

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Personal Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent and versatile GPS that I use for geocaching, driving, mountain biking, and hiking. I previously owned the Venture Cx and the display cracked due to my carelessness in the airline luggage. I upgraded to the new Legend HCx with the high sensitivity receiver and this unit significantly outperforms the older units. The new receiver fixes your location much faster and provides much better signal coverage. I noticed this as soon as I turned the Legend HCx on, as I was able to get a fix inside my house.
The expandable memory option (Cx) of the etrex series allows you to store a tremendous amount of map info. I installed the TOPO and City Navigator Mapsets for the entire state of CA and I am able to switch between mapsets. When I am on the trail, I "hide" the other mapsets and "show"/use the TOPO mapset. When driving on the road, I switch to City Navigator to get turn by turn navigation to my destination.
The only cons about the etrex series is that they have a small screen to view while driving and the menus/control button configuration are complex. I had to install my unit right on the steering column for driving. It took me awhile to learn and use all the features of the City Navigator and to switch between mapsets. But, for a pocket size all around GPS with excellent battery life, these are acceptable compromises.

Neither deep foliage nor steep canyons will faze the rugged Garmin eTrex Legend HCx navigator. Equipped with a high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, the unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover. The advantage is clear: whether you're traipsing through thick woods or strolling near tall buildings and trees, you can count on the Legend HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. Adding maps to the Legend HCx is easier than ever thanks to the device's microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and the Legend HCx will provide turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Plus, the card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you needn't worry about it getting wet.
Besides appreciating its small size, users will also be happy with the Legend HCx's unique button layout, with five buttons located on either side of the unit. The benefits of this design are twofold: First, the Legend HCx is a breeze to operate with just one hand, and, second, with the buttons on both sides of the unit, the bulk of the front is dedicated to the 256-color, sunlight-readable TFT display. This makes it easy to distinguish map details regardless of the time of day.
The Legend HCx basemap, meanwhile, contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Other details include an IPX7 waterproof housing that withstands inclement weather, a speedy USB interface, 1,000 waypoints with names and graphic symbols, a track log with 20 saved tracks, a hunt/fish calendar, a built-in patch antenna, and a geocaching mode. The Legend HCx, which runs for up to 25 hours on a pair of AA batteries (not included), measures 2.2 by 4.2 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box eTrex Legend HCx, basemap, MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager software, USB cable, wrist strap, quick start guide, user's manual.

Rand McNally TripMaker RVND 5510 0528003909 5-Inch GPS Unit Review

Rand McNally TripMaker RVND 5510 0528003909 5-Inch GPS Unit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The RVND 5510 GPS unit replaced a Garmin 3520 that we had used since 2004. Due to high cost of map updates, we hadn't purchased a new map set since 2007.
The RVND 5510 is a Rand McNally update of their truck series GPS units and provides information specific to travel with RV's. Features are unique and extensive. The user can enter specific RV type, weight, overall length and height to help the unit determine best rig specific routing.
Although we haven't used the device while towing our large fifth wheel trailer, I have told it we were driving our RV to see if routing features worked as advertised. They do.
With one tap, the user can select the RV or car, which changes routing choices accordingly. We have used the unit mostly in "car" mode selecting fastest or shortest routes, which is common for most travel GPS devices.
The Rand McNally seems no better or worse than previous GPS units we have used as far as map and route accuracy is concerned. We have found that it still helps to have a paper map available and/or some Google Earth pre-trip preparation made before traveling to unfamiliar places. There are only so many updates that the programmers can provide over time, and changes in roadways occur regularly.
Since the device can be connected to either Mac or PC's for regular updates, the POI and construction area information can be kept substantially current. Several construction areas near our current location have been accurately advised. This is an excellent feature.
When traveling on major roadways, mileposts are noted on the screen. This information is important when looking for a specific location or when reporting accidents or road emergencies or for any call for assistance.
When routing is enabled, the device advises of upcoming speed reductions at specified distances. The user can also put speed parameters in preferences that allow the device to warn of over speed driving.
There are two selectable "voices"...Tom (the male voice) and Samantha (the female voice). The voices are not terribly annoying.
The currently available 5" diagonal screen is adequate for our vehicle but might not be large enough for a coach, depending on unit placement. The "voices" are volume controlled and can be easily heard in the driver and passenger positions.PRO:
Works as advertised
Adequate size for our specific vehicle
Very readable screen
Milepost marking
Specific visual and audio warnings
Lots of RV specific information in a small package
Excellent suction cup window mount...heavy duty!
Seems to be accurate
Solid manufacture
Easy mounting and removal from window mount
No Garmin audio "Off route, recalculating!"
CON:
Left hand power connector obstructs closer mounting to window post
Direct or angle sunlight on unit tends to washout screen visibility
Cost a little on the high side for units of this type...but lots of good features
Rand McNally hasn't advised map update pricing yet (as far as I know)
Instructions not good...pretty much learn as you go (no problem for me)
Speed reduction warnings not engaged unless route entered
The Rand McNally GPS unit worked right out of the package and has not failed us at any point during the past three week long trial runs. I can't wait to get hooked up and underway with the device leading the way.

Garmin City Navigator Europe NT - UK/Ireland (010-10691-00) Review

Garmin City Navigator Europe NT - UK/Ireland (010-10691-00)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We just got back from Ireland. This Garmind UK and Ireland City Navigator SD card turned out to be essential to the enjoyment of our trip. It is more difficult than you can imagine, to sit in the right side of the car, driving on the left side of extremely narrow and twisting roads, including round-abouts (like a rotary, but going in the opposite direction) with multiple exits, and few street name signs. If we had been using paper maps, it would have been very difficult, as there were few shoulders on the roads, so there would have been no place to pull over to look at a map. A few times I did pick a wrong road, when the Garmin was running just a hair behind on the map, from where we physically were, but it immediately corrected the error. We never got lost, whether we were driving in a larger city, or on almost a cow path in the country side. This probably saved us some arguments about getting lost, and certainly reduced the stress in navigating.
At times the Garmin was slower than normal to load maps and find satellites, but no matter that the sky was normally cloudy, it did work. However, we did find that the POI's were severely lacking, and even some of the towns did not exist on the Garmin. Even so, just for the ease in navigating, it was worth it. So order one of these SD cards and take your trip in confidence.
PS. the Guinness Beer is much better than any Guinness you can get on tap in the United States. Also, the pubs are the place to do your eating. The atmosphere is quaint, and the food is hardy and reasonably priced. Have a great trip.
