(More customer reviews)I actually got this for my wife who runs a Girl Scout troop. This is an extremely fun tool for her troop (as well as for her, let's face it!) which does more than just function as a basic GPS.
In addition to making sure that you don't get lost, there are a number of other cool features:
- See a cool feature or landmark that you'd love to catalog? Take a quick picture using the built-in 3.2 MP camera along with your GPS location so you can go back and visit previously breathtaking views.
- Pictures not good enough for you? How about creating an audio log of what you're seeing? That's built-in too.
- Memory concerns? This device allows the use of microSD cards to expand your capacity for enough picture snapping and audio logging well beyond a typical enthusiast's hunger.
- Worried about the weather? This little device has got that in mind as well. It's waterproof and appears to be well-built for some good rain exposure. Haven't tested that aspect out, but just the general feel and build of this item has my wife feeling completely comfortable in any environment.
- Decent battery life. The device advertises 16 hours of continuous use. We didn't find ourselves wanting on a recent outing. However, you might want to pack some extra batteries just in case. The battery issue is a pro/con for me; making it a AA-battery device makes it easy to get the requisite energy in a flash, but part of me would have preferred a longer-laster lithium-ion charging solution. On the other hand, charging a lithium-ion device in the middle of nowhere leaves a lot to be desired as well. In the end, I gave it a thumbs-up.
- If you're interested in "treasure hunting", the geocaching.com activity might appeal to you. We didn't pursue it, but there is a 30-day free trial period where you can hunt waterproof containers across the US using your GPS device along with a subscription to the service. You can also add your own geocache for others to find. It's a unique idea.
Road maps are also pre-loaded, but don't expect this device to find the nearest Arby's for you; this is not what it's for. However, it does have more important points-of-interest like fire departments, hospitals, etc., should you find yourself in dire need of finding emergency assistance.
Other cool features include sun rise/set times, best hunt/fish times, alarm clock, etc. It's a neat little device that will fit most needs.
One other reviewer mentioned that the compass isn't good when you're stationary. This is absolutely correct. The GPS seems to key in on movement and using your differential x,y position to provide you with an accurate compass heading...just remember to keep moving to get your bearings right. While moving, the compass is dead-on accurate.
For a beginner hiker (or maybe even hunter/fisher!), this affordable hiking GPS is pretty cool and gets the job done.
